Upon arrival at Hasanuddin Airport Makassar, you will meet our Tour Guide and transfer directly to Tana Toraja. The drive takes about 8 hours, passing through Buginese villages with their unique wooden houses on stilts. First, visit Sumpangbinangae, a Bugis fishermen village, and see their traditional Pa’bagan fishing system. You can also observe local fishermen in their free time on land.
Lunch will be at Kupa Beach Restaurant, which offers a stunning sea and island view. In the afternoon, stop at Puncak Lakawan for a coffee break and enjoy the spectacular view of the erotic Mt. Buttukabong. Late in the afternoon, arrive in Rantepao, the capital of North Toraja Regency. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
After breakfast, we will take you on a full-day tour around Tana Toraja. First, visit Lemo, where you can see stone graves on the cliffs with rows of Tau-Tau effigies representing the dead. Then, continue to Sangalla to visit Tampanggallo, one of the oldest burial caves in Tana Toraja. Here, you will find bones placed in the corners of the cave, along with ancient coffins and Tau-Tau effigies.
Next, take a 15-minute walk to Suaya and explore the small Torajan villages that offer a peaceful atmosphere. In Suaya, you will also find the graves of the former Sangalla royal family. Afterwards, drive for about 20 minutes to Kote, where you will learn the extraordinary story of the Baby Graves on Trees.
Lunch will be at Panorama Restaurant, where you can enjoy Torajan cuisine such as Pammarasan (meat with black seasoning) or Pappiong (chicken cooked in bamboo). After lunch, take a leisurely walking tour around Karuaya to see fascinating villages, hills, and rice terraces while observing local activities.
Before returning to the hotel, visit Kete’ Kesu, the most important village for the Toraja community. Here, you will find old Torajan Tongkonan houses and rice barns. This village is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After spending enough time there, return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, we will take you on another full-day tour to explore the northern part of Tana Toraja. First, visit Londa, where you will see one of the strangest and most spectacular graves in the world. After that, head to Bolu to explore the buffalo market and learn how important and valuable buffalos are for Toraja funerary rites.
Then, proceed to Bori to see ancient monoliths and a Torajan house decorated with more than 300 buffalo horns. Next, visit Sa’dan Weaving Center, where women weave traditional Toraja Ikat and Sarong. This village also offers a beautiful ambiance with authentic houses, a river, and mountains surrounded by rice terraces.
Afterwards, visit Pallawa, an ancient Torajan village where you can see how Torajan people live in their traditional communities. Then, drive up to Tinimbayo Highlands for a nature photography stop, capturing stunning wild rice terraces dotted with small villages and scattered rocks.
Lunch will be at Saman Batutumonga Café & Restaurant, which offers a fantastic and breathtaking view of Rantepao, surrounded by rocky mountains. After lunch, visit the giant rock of Lo’komata, which is filled with graves. In the afternoon, enjoy a soft adventure around Landorundun, a remote village where you can experience peace, impressive landscapes, and marvelous rice fields.
After breakfast, we will drive back to Makassar via the same road as on the first day. Along the way, we will stop again at Puncak Lakawan to see the erotic mountain from a different side. Lunch will be at a local restaurant in Pare-Pare, where you can relax before continuing the journey.
In the afternoon, arrive in Makassar and transfer directly to Hasanuddin Airport to catch your flight to your next destination or to your hotel in Makassar.
