Komodo National Park – A Natural Wonder in Indonesia
Komodo National Park is in Indonesia, and it lies between East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara. The park covers 1,733 km², so it includes Komodo, Padar, and Rinca islands, along with 26 smaller ones. It was founded in 1980 because the Komodo dragon, the world’s largest lizard, needed protection. Later, the park expanded to protect other wildlife, including marine species. In 1991, UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site, and it is also one of the New7Wonders of Nature.
The waters around the islands are rich in marine biodiversity, so they are part of the Coral Triangle. Komodo and Rinca were once part of Flores, but they are now separated by the Sape Strait. This strait is deep because the ocean floor drops hundreds of meters. The Pacific Ocean to the north is higher than the Indian Ocean to the south, so the tidal flow creates some of the world’s strongest currents.
Visitors can explore the park in different ways. Some choose luxury scuba liveaboards, while others take short daily snorkeling trips. Many also prefer 3-day, 2-night boat tours from Lombok to Flores because they offer a mix of adventure and relaxation. The park’s natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and strong ocean currents make it a unique and unforgettable destination.
