About this activity

Lake Toba, Gunung Leuser Orangutan & Berastagi Tour – 10 Days 9 Nights

Explore the natural wonders and cultural heritage of North Sumatra on this private Lake Toba and Gunung Leuser Tour – 10 Days 9 Nights. This complete Sumatra adventure combines orangutan trekking, jungle camping, volcanic landscapes, traditional Batak villages, and relaxing days beside the world’s largest volcanic lake.

Your journey starts in Medan before continuing to Bukit Lawang, one of the main gateways to Gunung Leuser National Park. Here, you will enter one of Southeast Asia’s richest tropical rainforests with an experienced local guide. Look for Sumatran orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, gibbons, hornbills, and other native wildlife.

After exploring the rainforest, travel through North Sumatra’s scenic countryside to Berastagi. This cool highland region offers volcanic views, fertile farmland, colorful markets, and traditional Karo culture. Next, continue to Sipiso-Piso Waterfall and enjoy spectacular views across Lake Toba before crossing to Samosir Island.

Gunung Leuser Orangutan Trekking and Jungle Camping

Gunung Leuser National Park forms part of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra. Its vast ecosystem protects some of Indonesia’s rarest wildlife, including Sumatran orangutans, elephants, tigers, and rhinoceroses.

During this tour, you will join a guided jungle trek from Bukit Lawang. Walk beneath tall rainforest trees, follow natural trails, and listen to the sounds of birds and primates. Your guide will explain the forest ecosystem while helping you observe wildlife responsibly from a safe distance.

In addition, you will spend one night at a simple campsite beside the river. The jungle team will prepare meals and camping equipment. The following day, continue trekking before returning to Bukit Lawang. Depending on river and weather conditions, the return journey may include traditional tubing along the Bohorok River.

Orangutans and other animals live freely in the rainforest. Therefore, sightings cannot be guaranteed. Guests must follow the national park guide’s instructions and avoid touching, feeding, or approaching wildlife.

Explore Berastagi and Mount Sibayak

After the rainforest adventure, continue to Berastagi in the Karo Highlands. The town lies between Mount Sibayak and Mount Sinabung, creating dramatic landscapes and a refreshing mountain climate.

Rise early for a guided hike to Mount Sibayak. From the upper slopes, enjoy views of volcanic terrain and the surrounding highlands. After descending, relax in a natural hot spring before returning to your hotel.

Travelers who prefer not to hike can choose a softer sightseeing program. Alternative activities may include visiting a Karo village, the Berastagi fruit market, Gundaling Hill, or local farms.

Sipiso-Piso Waterfall and Lake Toba Views

The journey continues from Berastagi toward Lake Toba. Along the way, stop at Sipiso-Piso Waterfall, one of North Sumatra’s most impressive natural attractions. Water drops from the edge of the Karo Plateau into a deep valley below.

From the nearby viewpoint, admire the northern section of Lake Toba and the surrounding mountains. Afterward, travel to Parapat and board a ferry to Samosir Island.

Discover Samosir Island and Batak Culture

Samosir Island sits in the heart of Lake Toba and remains the cultural homeland of the Batak Toba people. During a private island tour, visit traditional villages and learn about the history, architecture, music, and customs of the region.

Explore Tomok Village and see the ancient stone tomb of King Sidabutar. Then continue to Ambarita, which is known for its historic stone chairs and traditional meeting place. Depending on timing and availability, the program may also include Simanindo Village and a Batak cultural performance.

Traditional wooden houses, mountain scenery, and peaceful lake views make Samosir one of the highlights of this North Sumatra tour.

Relax Beside Lake Toba

After several days of trekking and overland travel, enjoy a free day at Lake Toba. Relax at your hotel, walk through nearby villages, swim, rent a canoe, or visit a lakeside café.

The flexible schedule allows you to experience Samosir at a comfortable pace. Optional activities can also be arranged based on your interests and local availability.

A Comfortable Private North Sumatra Journey

This private North Sumatra tour includes personal transportation between destinations and an itinerary designed around your group. You will stay in selected hotels in Bukit Lawang, Berastagi, Samosir, and Medan, as well as one night at a basic jungle campsite.

The route balances active experiences with enough time to rest. Moreover, a final night in Medan reduces the risk of missing your departure flight after the long journey from Samosir.

Who Is This Tour Suitable For?

This journey suits couples, families with active older children, private groups, nature lovers, and travelers interested in authentic Indonesian culture. Participants should have reasonable fitness for jungle trekking and the optional Mount Sibayak hike.

The itinerary can be adjusted for different ages and fitness levels. Hotel categories, trekking duration, room types, and optional activities can also be customized.

Flight Information from Bali

This Lake Toba and Gunung Leuser Tour starts and ends at Kualanamu International Airport in Medan. Guests traveling from Bali should fly from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) to Kualanamu International Airport (KNO).

Bali to Medan Flight

Flight options between Bali and Medan may include a direct service or one transit in Jakarta or Surabaya, depending on the airline and travel date. A direct flight takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, while a connecting flight normally takes 5–8 hours or longer.

Because flight schedules may change, we strongly recommend arriving in Medan one day before the tour begins. This prevents a late arrival from affecting the transfer to Bukit Lawang and the next day’s orangutan trekking program.

Medan to Bali Flight

After the final night in Medan, we will provide a private transfer to Kualanamu International Airport. Guests may book a direct or connecting flight back to Bali according to the available schedule.

We recommend choosing a departure after 10:00 a.m. to allow enough time for breakfast, hotel check-out, and the airport transfer.

Flight Tickets and Airport Transfers

Domestic flight tickets can be arranged upon request. Please check the final quotation to confirm whether the following services are included:

  • Bali–Medan flight ticket
  • Medan–Bali flight ticket
  • Checked baggage allowance
  • Airport pick-up on arrival
  • Airport transfer on departure

Important Flight Notice

Airline schedules, routes, baggage allowances, and fares may change without prior notice. Flight availability must be reconfirmed for your selected travel dates. After issuance, tickets follow the airline’s cancellation and amendment conditions.

Please provide every passenger’s full name exactly as written on their passport before ticket issuance. Name changes may not be permitted after booking.

Current schedules can vary, so guests should not rely on an old published flight time. Lion Air previously operated the direct DPS–KNO route in approximately 3 hours 40 minutes, but the exact service must be checked for the chosen date.

Flight Arrangement

We can arrange this tour as a complete package, including return domestic flights from Bali to Medan, accommodation, private transportation, and all activities listed in the itinerary. Please contact us before booking so we can check the latest flight schedules, fares, and tour availability for your preferred travel dates.
